Nitrile rubber may operate up to about 100 °C. Grundfos uses it in its shaft seals as it has a high resistance to oil and fuel.
To ensure that the pumped media does not runout of the pumps, shaft seals in rubber (among other materials) are used as sealing materials. Different types of rubber are used, depending upon the media and pressure conditions. nitrile rubber is one of these types.
Nitrile rubber may operate up to about 100°C. Nitrile rubber is an inexpensive material that has a high resistance to oil and fuel. Different grades exist: the higher the acrylonitrile (ACN) content, the higher the oil resistance. Unfortunately, low temperature flexibility becomes poorer as well. Nitrile rubbers have high resilience and high wear resistance but only moderate strength. Further, the rubber has limited weathering resistance and poor solvent resistance. It can generally be used down to about -30°C, but certain grades can operate at lower temperatures.
